March 28 – Notorious! Shady Ladies of the 19th Century

5:30 pm – 7:00 pm

Phyllis Chapman of Vintage Visitors returns to the Pruyn House for Women’s History Month to talk about some of the scandalous women of the 19th century. You will learn about the exploits of women who flouted the social norms of the time, including the likes of Calamity Jane, Belle Starr, Carry Nation, Lizzie Borden, and others. If you are intrigued by those naughty women who made history by gun toting, axe whacking, and free loving, this is a must-see! This presentation has been sold out at other venues. April 7 – May 3 -Colonie Art League Exhibit

Weekdays, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm

Local artists from the Colonie Art League will again display their paintings and photography throughout the main floor of the historic Pruyn House beginning April 7 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm weekdays. This is a juried show and artwork will be judged prior to the opening day. Many creations are offered for sale, so if you are looking for a special piece designed by a local artist for your home, don’t miss this show. The show is open free of charge for Friends of Pruyn House and the public.

Docent Training

The Friends of Pruyn House has several openings for members to volunteer as docents during concert season in July and August and on Old Fashioned Sunday, September 8. If you enjoy chatting with people, love art, antiques, history and have a passion for learning and sharing that knowledge with the public, you will make an excellent docent and we would love to have you as part of our team! Docents can volunteer one time, or at several events as your own schedule allows. The Friends of Pruyn House will offer free training for docents on Tuesday, April 9 in the House at 11 am. The program will run about 45 minutes to an hour and refreshments will be served. Please call us at 518-783-1435. We’ll save a seat for you!

April 11

Free Jazz Concert Featuring Art D’Echo 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Come to the Pruyn House for a free evening of jazz favorites performed by the Art D’Echo Trio. They recently performed a sold-out concert at the Universal Preservation Hall in Saratoga, the GE Theater at Proctors, and many local venues. The event is made possible by Diane Geddes and the Albany Musicians Association (American Federation of Musicians Local 14) and by the Music Performance Trust Fund. The concert is free, but seating is limited, so please reserve your spot by calling 518-783-1435.

A Conversation with Mark Twain 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm

Beloved literary figure, Mark Twain was one of the most prolific and acerbic commentators on life in the 1800s. His words are remarkably relevant to today’s issues, more than 100 years after his death. Living historian and Baptist minister Rev. Jim Ketcham presents a “conversation” with Mark Twain using Twain’s own words to describe “the whole damned human race.” Reserve your seat today by calling 518-783-1435; members, $5; not-yet-members $10; payable at the door.

May 11

Fort Orange Garden Club Plant Sale & Town of Colonie Conservation Day 9:00 am – 1:00 pm

The long-awaited Fort Orange Garden Club plant and tag sale are slated for Saturday, May 11 in the Buhrmaster Barn from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm. Plan to come early to get the best selection of beautiful annuals, quality perennials, tomatoes, vegetables, herbs, and planters. Members will be on hand to help you with your gardening questions, as well.

The Town of Colonie Conservation Day will be held concurrently on the Pruyn House grounds. Supervisor Peter G. Crummey, the Town Board and the Town’s Conservation Advisory Council are sponsoring the distribution of free tree seedlings, and mulch, together with informative stations promoting conservation. Mark your calendar for these ever-popular events.

May 14

Genealogy 101 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm

In partnership with the Town of Colonie Historical Society, we present Genealogy 101. The popular PBS show “Finding Your Roots,” has spurred a wide-spread interest in people tracing their ancestors. Chris White, a professional genealogist and President of the Capital District Genealogical Society, will help get you get started by presenting an overview of the process, where to start looking, how to manage information, and best practices and resources. Easter Bunny Photo Opportunity

Come take your photos with Jelly Bean, the Easter Bunny!

Take your family’s Easter picture at The Pruyn House and make a memory to share with family and friends for years to come! Circle Saturday, March 23, 2024 on your calendar!

The cost is $25 and you may take your family pictures indoors or outdoors with Jelly Bean, the Easter Bunny. In addition, every child visiting the Easter Bunny will go home with an Easter treat.

Please call 518-783-1435 to reserve your spot for the photo. We’ll have 10-minute spots available from 9am until 1pm. Remember to bring your own camera or phone – and get dressed up for a fun visit with the Easter Bunny!Reservations must be made by Wednesday, March 20th.
